The Trinity

questions

Q:

How can you justify the trinity, when God is one? And how can you call Jesus Lord, when the Old Testament says there is no other Lord but God?

W.R.

A:

Scripture clearly teaches there are three distinct Persons in the Deity – Father, Son, and Spirit – yet absolutely one in nature, mind, purpose, and way; together forming the one, true, eternal God. In the New Testament we have the full revelation of this truth (Matt.28:19) , but it is established in the Old Testament; indeed, in the first verse of Genesis the Hebrew name translated God is Elohim, the plural form of Eloah. It suggests a trinity in the Being who created all things. In v. 2 the Spirit is named. Ps. 2 plainly declares the Son and hence if One is Son the other must be Father (Pro.30:4). In the New Testament the Trinity is seen throughout. Christ was here, declaring Himself the Son, speaking to His Father, the Spirit coming upon Him in the form of a dove.

We call Jesus Lord, for such He is. "God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ" (Acts 2). He is My Lord (Jn. 20:13, 28). He is Our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:2, 3). And "no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost" (1 Cor. 12:3).
